What to Do When Your Toilet Is Blocked

A blocked toilet is stressful, but most are fixable without calling a plumber. Here is exactly what to do — and what not to do — step by step.

Quick answer

Stop flushing immediately. Use a flange plunger with firm push-pull motions for 30-60 seconds. If that fails, pour dish soap and hot (not boiling) water into the bowl, wait 15 minutes, and plunge again. If still blocked, use a toilet auger to reach the trap. Never use chemical drain cleaners — they damage porcelain and rarely work. If none of these clear the blockage, call a licensed plumber.

TL;DR
  • • Stop flushing — every flush adds water and increases the mess.
  • • Use a flange plunger (not a sink plunger) with firm, sharp pulls.
  • • Try dish soap + hot water if plunging alone does not work.
  • • Never use chemical drain cleaners — they can crack the porcelain.
  • • A toilet auger reaches blockages the plunger cannot.
  • • If the toilet is overflowing or sewage is backing up elsewhere, call a plumber immediately.

6 steps to fix a blocked toilet

Follow these steps in order. Most blockages resolve at step 3 (plunger). Stop at any step where the toilet drains freely.

1. Stop flushing

Do not flush again. Every extra flush adds more water to an already blocked bowl. If the water level is high and rising, locate the shutoff valve behind the toilet (usually a small knob on the wall or floor) and turn it clockwise to stop the water flow.

2. Assess the water level

If the water is close to the rim and still rising, the blockage is severe. Place towels around the base of the toilet to catch overflow. If the water level is low or stable, you have time to try a few DIY methods safely.

3. Try a plunger first

A good flange plunger (the one with a rubber flap inside the cup) creates a proper seal in the toilet outlet. Place it over the hole, push down gently to expel air, then pull up sharply. Repeat 10-15 times. The suction-and-pressure action dislodges most toilet blockages. Do not use a standard sink plunger — it will not seal properly.

4. If the plunger fails, try hot water and dish soap

Pour a generous squirt of dishwashing liquid into the toilet bowl, followed by a bucket of hot (not boiling) water poured from waist height. The soap lubricates the pipe while the hot water and pressure help break up the blockage. Leave it for 15-30 minutes, then try plunging again.

5. Check the toilet trap

If plunging and hot water do not work, the blockage may be in the toilet trap (the S-shaped bend inside the porcelain). A toilet auger (closet auger) can reach into the trap and break up or retrieve the obstruction. These are available at hardware stores for around $25, or a plumber will have one on board.

6. Call a plumber if nothing works

If you have tried plunging, hot water, and an auger and the toilet is still blocked, the obstruction may be deeper in the waste pipe, or the issue may be a main sewer line blockage affecting the toilet. A plumber will use a drain camera and electric eel to clear it properly.

What NOT to do

Do not flush again — you will flood the bathroom.

Do not pour boiling water — it can crack the porcelain or melt the wax seal.

Do not use chemical drain cleaners — they generate heat and caustic fumes.

Do not keep plunging for more than 5 minutes — you may damage the toilet or push the blockage deeper.

Do not use a wire coat hanger — it can scratch the porcelain and damage the trap.

When to call a plumber

Call a plumber if:

  • The toilet is overflowing and you cannot stop the water flow.
  • You have tried plunging, hot water, and an auger with no success.
  • Other fixtures (shower, sink) are also draining slowly or backing up.
  • The toilet has been blocked for more than 24 hours.
  • Your toilet keeps blocking every few weeks — there may be an underlying pipe issue.

If the blockage is deeper in the waste pipe or part of a main line issue, a plumber will need a CCTV camera and electric eel. Contact our blocked drain team for fast, reliable service across the Northern Beaches. For urgent after-hours blockages, call our emergency plumber.

Northern Beaches considerations

Toilet blockages on the Northern Beaches often have a specific cause: tree root intrusion. Established gardens in older suburbs like Mosman, Dee Why, and Balgowlah mean roots frequently grow into clay sewer pipes. If your toilet keeps blocking despite clearing the trap, roots may be the culprit — a CCTV inspection will confirm.

Another common cause we see in coastal suburbs like Manly and Brookvale: non-flushable "flushable" wipes. Despite what the packaging claims, these wipes do not break down in pipes and are the #1 cause of toilet blockages in properties with young families. Stick to toilet paper only.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use chemical drain cleaner in a blocked toilet?

No. Chemical drain cleaners are not designed for toilets. They generate heat that can crack the porcelain or damage the wax seal, and they rarely clear toilet blockages because the standing water dilutes the chemicals before they reach the clog.

Why does my toilet keep blocking?

Recurring toilet blockages usually indicate a partial obstruction deeper in the waste pipe — a buildup of scale, a protruding pipe joint, or tree root intrusion. It could also be too much toilet paper being flushed, or non-flushable wipes. A CCTV inspection will identify the root cause.

Is a blocked toilet an emergency?

It depends. If the toilet is overflowing or sewage is backing up into other fixtures, yes — call an emergency plumber immediately. If it is simply not flushing but not overflowing, you can wait until business hours, but avoid using it until it is cleared.

How much does it cost to unblock a toilet on the Northern Beaches?

Most standard toilet unblocking costs $150-300 during business hours. If the blockage is in the main sewer line rather than the toilet itself, the cost is higher because CCTV and jetting are needed. We provide upfront quotes before any work.
